Update: Carptenter 1 Fire Grows to 10,935 Acres

According to the U.S. Forest Service this morning, the Carpenter 1 Fire has grown to 10,935 acres. Currently 12 Hotshot Crews, 26 engines, 5 helicopters and air tankers struggle to control the fire. Despite all of the effort so far, the fire is still not contained.

Plans were made on Friday to turn Centennial High School into the incident command post for the fire. That plan would keep personal and resources closer to the threatened structures on the mountain. An estimated 700 to 800 firefighters would camp at the high school.

Crews from the Nevada Division of Forestry have been stationed in the neighborhoods of Kyle Canyon as well as at the Las Vegas Ski and Snowboard Resort in Lee Canyon. The ski resort has been providing support to the crews as well as thousands of gallons of water from their snow making reservoir. Crews have also been utilizing the resort’s chairlifts to reach the peak of the mountain.

On Friday, multiple tankers unloaded retardant on the range from Charleston Peak to Griffith Peak for precautionary measures.

Roads still remain closed going into Mount Charleston.

As of Friday night, there were no injuries or damage to buildings reported.

Recent estimates place the uncontrolled Carpenter 1 Fire at 6,000 to 8,000 acres. Approximately 500 evacuations have occurred on the mountain while hundreds of fire fighters battle the blaze. Evacuated areas include Trout Canyon, Kyle Canyon and Lee Canyon.

The fire started by lightning on the Pahrump side of Mount Charleston on Monday, but shifted towards the Kyle and Lee Canyon side of the mountain. One Mount Charleston fire fighter stated she saw flames in excess of 200 feet cresting the peak of Kyle Canyon.

Air crews are dumping water and retardant on the fire while trying to gain control of the fire. The Las Vegas Ski and Snowboard Resort has a large water reservoir that they use for creating snow in the winter. The helicopter air crews are currently using that water to suppress the fire.

Hotshot fire crews are being brought in from California, Utah and other parts of Nevada.
BLM has reported no injuries or damaged structures at the current time. The American Red Cross has set up evacuation centers for residents effected by the fire. More information can be had by calling the BLM information line at 702-515-5105.

State Routes 156 and 157, which are the only roads into and out of Mount Charleston, are currently closed for traffic.

The air quality in Clark County has been negatively affected, not only from the fire but also from the holiday fireworks. The Department of Air Quality has issued a hazardous air advisory through Friday.

Wildfire Forces Mount Charleston Residents to Evacuate

Mt. Charleston FireThe Carpenter Canyon Fire, also known as the Carpenter One Fire, started on Monday and continues to burn. Despite all of the work to extinguish it, there is still no containment. Sources state the fire started from lightning and has consumed over 1,000 acres.

On Thursday, mandatory evacuations were put in place for Trout Canyon which later lead to Kyle Canyon being evacuated. Residents and campers alike were forced to head off the mountain. Later that evening, Las Vegas Metro Police evacuated the Lee Canyon side of the mountain. All roads to Mt. Charleston are closed to traffic at the present time.

The American Red Cross will be opening evacuation centers in Pahrump at Hafen Elementary School for Pahrump residents and at Bilbray Elementary School for Mt. Charleston residents.
The Bureau of Land Management originally stated the fire consumed close to 2,000 acres, but recent estimates on the size of the fire are around 1,250 acres.

Thunderstorms and wind on Thursday cancelled the attempt of a controlled burn. If the wind increases to 45mph, air support for the fire will forced to stop as well.

BLM has set up a public information phone number at 702-515-5105 which gives information about the fire and the Red Cross evacuation centers.
