UPDATE: Large Fire on Mount Charleston

The U.S. Forest Service has reported that the fire in Carpenter Canyon on the Pahrump side of Mount Charleston has increased in size to around 1,800 acres.  At this time the fire is not considered to be contained.

Currently four engines, a helicopter and an air tanker dropping retardant are being used.  The Forest Service plans to replace the crews currently fighting the fire with a new crew on Thursday.

Although the nearest town of Trout Canyon is about two miles away, no structures are threatened at this time.

At the present time, the American Red Cross is preparing volunteers and supplies in case the fire grows to a point which requires a shelter to be opened.

Large Fire on Mount Charleston

The Bureau of Land Management is currently battling a large wildfire on Mount Charleston.  The fire started on Monday and is believed to have been started by lightning.

The fire is located near Lee Springs in the Carpenter Canyon area on the Pahrump side of Mount Charleston.  Trout Canyon Road at State Route 160 is now closed. Approximately 1,000 acres of land have been burned so far.

Dry brush and juniper trees are fueling the fire and the dry weather conditions are not helping to extinguish the fire.  Currently a tanker, helicopter and four fire engines are working to put out the fire.

Mt. Charleston Fire Restrictions Are In Effect

Increasing daytime temperatures, dry vegetation and lingering drought conditions have prompted BLM and the USFS to implement Stage 1 Fire Restrictions on Mt. Charleston.

Fire Restrictions Prohibit:

  • Building, maintaining, attending or using a fire (using wood, charcoal or any other material), campfire, or stove fire except a portable stove using gas or pressurized liquid fuel, outside of a developed fee campground or picnic area (except by permit).
  • Smoking, except within an enclosed vehicle or at a developed campground or picnic area.
  • Welding, or operating an acetylene torch with open flames, except by permit.
  • Using or causing to be used, any explosive, except by permit.
  • Possession or use of fireworks (always prohibited), or any other incendiary device.
  • Use of tracer rounds, steel-core ammunition or exploding targets including Binary Explosive Targets while recreational shooting.
  • Open burning (e.g. weeds, brush and yard debris).

In addition, the Nevada Division of Forestry, and the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest prohibit operating vehicles off of existing hard surface gravel roads or dirt roads in wildland areas, and operating vehicles or equipment traveling on or using wildland areas without at least an axe, shovel and one gallon of water. All agencies recommend avoiding cross-country travel whenever possible to prevent hot exhaust systems from igniting grass and recommend that individuals carry cell phones while in the wildlands or national forests to report wildfires.

As fire season continues the BLM, USFS, NDF, BIA and USFWS will be aggressively citing those who do not comply with the posted restrictions and those who use or possess fireworks. Violation of these prohibitions is subject to punishment by a fine of not more than $10,000 or imprisonment for not more than six months or both, as Class B misdemeanors under federal law (agency statutes vary). Persons may also be responsible for resource damage, suppression costs and any injuries that occur if they are found liable for causing a wildfire.

For more information or clarification on the restrictions, please contact the BLM-Carson City District Office at 775-885-6000, the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest at 775-331-6444, the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service at 775-423-5128, the BIA at 775-887-3500, or the Nevada Division of Forestry at 775-849-2500.

The potential for devastating fires during the summer is very real. Report fires immediately by dialing 911.

Snow Host Volunteers Needed

The US Forest Service is looking for volunteers to be Snow Hosts this winter in the Mt Charleston area of the Spring Mountains National Recreation Area. Every weekend in the winter, hundreds of people flock to the mountains to play in the snow. Many times they lack the knowledge of where to go, what they can do, and how to be safe. Snow play hosts provide roadside information about snow play opportunities, and take part in the fun while engaging visitors at snow play sites. Snow hosts will also help visitors have a fun snow play experience while reducing impacts to the forest environment.

Typical duties will include promoting safe snow play practices, engaging visitors in creative snow play activities, and providing visitor information at roadside stations. Experience volunteering in a similar setting a plus, but not required. Volunteers should be at least 18 years old and able to work outdoors in cold conditions. Snow play hosts work on weekends and holidays. Average shifts range between three to six hours. Minimum commitment desired is two shifts per month. We happily welcome volunteers to contribute hours beyond the minimum. Volunteers are needed now through the end of March.

Snow Host Volunteer Orientations will be held for interested volunteers to learn more about the program. They will be held on Monday, December 3rd and Tuesday, December 18 at REI on 710 S. Rampart Boulevard at 7:00pm. Interested volunteers only need to attend one orientation.

Please contact Cody Dix at volunteer@gomtcharleston.com or 702.515.5408 for more info or to apply.

More information can be found here.
